YouthWords City Employees Enable YouthWorks to Hire 250 Summer Interns
San Francisco YouthWorks is a unique high school internship program that places youth interns in city government, teaching them crucial job skills while sparking their interest in public service careers.
Motivated by Mayor Lee’s Summer Jobs+ initiative, SF YouthWorks set a goal to serve a record high number of youth this summer. Our goal was to place 250 youth in high-quality paid public sector summer internships.
During the months of May and June, YouthWorks staff called, emailed and visited San Francisco City departments to spread the word about our program and our summer service goal. Fortunately, these efforts were successful, and as of today we have placed 250 youth in summer jobs. Over 100 new internship slots were identified, including slots in departments new to SF YouthWorks such as Animal Care and Control, the Department of Human Resources, and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.
This increase was possible due to the tremendous generosity of City departments that responded to the Mayor’s call to host youth interns this summer. We are grateful to all of the City employees who have volunteered, and would like to particularly acknowledge those individuals who put in significant effort to recruit other mentors within their departments:
- Martha Arroyo-Neves, Assistant Chief of Branches for the San Francisco Public Library, provided invaluable support to us in spreading the word about YouthWorks to SFPL branches throughout the City. With her support, we were able to place 31 interns in library internships this summer.
- Warren Cole, Human Resource Director at the SF Municipal Transportation Agency, actively sought new YouthWorks mentors in his department. With his support, we were able to place 13 interns in the MTA this summer.
- April Ward of the SF Department of Human Resources helped us to expand into this department for the first time, and to place 6 interns there this summer.
Thanks to everyone who is are partnering with SF YouthWorks this summer to ensure a successful summer session for 250 San Francisco youth!
