There are many instances in one’s life where the door of opportunity opens and invites us in. That door of opportunity happened to open up in the summer before my junior year began. I decided to look around for a “job that paid well”. I, like many teenagers around this age, wanted “fast money”. I had never put much of a consideration towards my academics or even thought of having some sort of a goal for my future. That was when I began to intern for San Francisco’s YouthWorks. I was placed under San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department, McLaren Lodge.

Similar to what many other interns have done, I began with the simple tasks of filing documents and/or informing staff about events. As my time in the internship extended, I found myself developing strong working relationships with the staff at McLaren Lodge. I worked extensively with one specific staff member who was not only friendly and approachable, but also an inspirational and motivated individual. Regardless of what she had assigned me to do, be it filing or scanning a document, there was always some sort of significance to it.

Even after the internship had ended, I found myself continuing to work alongside San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department. The following summer after my junior year had ended, I worked as a junior camp counselor for an art camp. I will work for them again this summer. Now, I continue to work with the department and San Francisco’s YouthWorks, but this time, as a Youth Leadership Team member. In this job I help voice interns’ concerns or questions and help plan and facilitate workshops on topics like resume building and money management. I will also be attending college at Long Beach State this fall.

What began as merely something to make money, turned out to be one great experience as a whole. The staff within the program has been supportive throughout these past two years. YouthWorks has not only allowed me to grow as an individual, but also helped open this “door of opportunity. I can’t express how grateful I am for giving it a shot.

In January, President Obama announced an initiative called Summer Jobs+. He called on businesses, non-profits and the public sector to increase employment opportunities for low-income youth and those disconnected from school or work.

President Obama announced, “America’s young people face record unemployment, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they’ve got the opportunity to earn the skills and a work ethic that come with a job….Today, we’re launching Summer Jobs+, a joint initiative that challenges business leaders and communities to join my Administration in providing hundreds of thousands of summer jobs for America’s youth.”

San Francisco City leadership and the youth employment community have eagerly responded to this call. As the summer rapidly approaches, efforts are underway to catalyze thousands of new youth jobs in San Francisco in the public and private sector.

On April 12, Mayor Ed Lee and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced the launch of San Francisco’s local Summer Jobs+ campaign. “I’m calling on all San Francisco companies to take on this challenge to support the youth of San Francisco,” said Mayor Lee. “Creating meaningful employment opportunities for our young people today will set them up for success now and in the future.”

Mayor Lee also called upon City departments to provide leadership in the effort to create more youth employment opportunities through their support of YouthWorks and other programs. With the generous support of the Department of Children, Youth and their Families and other City departments, we are planning to identify up to 100 new internship slots for the summer session. We are actively working to identify City employees to serve as worksite mentors for these new internships.

The Tomodachi Summer Program offers children (entering Kindergarten – 6th grade) a unique opportunity to not only build new friendships, but also gain exposure to a variety of activities and interests. Through Tomodachi’s Club Days, children can participate in everything from athletic skill development to creative writing. The goal of the program is to offer children a well-rounded experience and to minimize the “runaround” that parents often have to endure to ensure that their child is exposed to a diverse array of interests.

Weekly Japanese cultural enrichment workshops and activities are being planned and will focus on – Japanese Arts & Crafts, Food and Games, Sports and Toys. The children will learn and experience the different aspects of the Japanese culture from experts in and around the Japantown community.

In addition to the Club Days and Japanese cultural activities, children will have the opportunity to participate in fun field trips. Past field trips have included: Discovery Kingdom, ice skating, and the zoo.

New for 2012…With the longer summer break, the Tomodachi program has expanded to include a 10th week to meet the needs of San Francisco families.

JCYC is particularly proud of the many children who grow up through this program and move on to become participants of the Teen Program and eventually Youth Leaders. All Youth Leaders participate in 40 hours of training to prepare them to be positive mentors for young children. Training topics include: early childhood behavior, how to effectively supervise and implement activities with children; first aid; and safety procedures.
